The Identity of Your Online Presence
Online contexts are important for adolescents’ identity to develop because depending on the online environment they’re in, it can affect them positively or negatively. With a negative online environment, it can cause them to not want to be open about who they are and what they’re interested in. It causes them to shut their self-identity down online and possibly offline. Being able to set adolescents in a positive setting will help them grow into developing their identity. The positive setting helps them respond better into being more confident in what they post and what they do online. It’s in the best interests for adolescents to place themselves in a positive online environment in order to grow and develop their identity.
Social networks provide the opportunity for people to learn and connect with one another in seconds/minutes. You can learn so much from social networks that sometimes you don’t even realize it yourself because you get caught onto reading the things you see on your timeline. Forming your digital identity on social networks is important prior to what you will be seeing mostly of. As an example, I share a lot of memes and funny videos on Facebook and so I would see memes and funny videos on my timeline rather than something unrelated to what I’ve been sharing. Meaning that if you keep a tight digital identity of professionalism, you will most likely see those types of stuff. Social networks are personalized to fit your digital identity and so it’s important to pay attention to what you do on there.
The experiences that the network can provide for an individual is massive. You can learn so much through a network, but it’s also important to keep it safe in order to grow. Revealing oneself identity online may cause some issues if not set in a safe setting. Such as the people that were shown in the TedTalk video by Alec Couros who took their own life due to cyberbullying. Making connections prior to exploring the social networks will help increase the positivity online and make it easier to develop their identity. It will create a safe space for them to grow and have a good experience.
